The Only Gold That Matters

The Winter Olympics are upon us - and Canada has finally broken the hosting-gold medal curse. In fact, we have two gold medals already, but the REAL tournament starts tonight: Men's Hockey.
That's right - we Canadians wouldn't really mind if we didn't win a single other medal, but this one, this one is a matter of pride, it's a matter of national identity. We do hockey. That's what we do.
Tonight: Norway. With all due respect, this should be a cakewalk. Should be, but I'm nervous because I get nervous. I worry about my hockey team. I'm used to cheering for the Habs, and these days, a win for them is never easy, so I've become used to lowering my standards so as not to be crushed.
But we're the favourites, and though I logically know we're likely to defeat Norway, the pool is deep and getting the gold won't be easy. But this is the medal. This is the one every Canadian wants (unless of course you're my younger sister, who has a chip on her shoulder against hockey from years of my abandoning her to watch games on Saturday nights instead).
Mike Boone, my favourite hockey blogger, is going to be live-blogging all Team Canada games. Let's hope I can report back in a couple of weeks with the only gold that matters.

It's our game on our rink at our Olympics. This is very much a matter of pride. And the team showed up in spectacular fashion yesterday. I would have felt bad for Norway if I weren't too busy feeling thrilled for us!

I totally know what you mean. But seriously, I need more than a rout of Norway. Gold or nothing else...

oh poor bitter sister, haven't I made up to you my lack of attentions when the game was on during our childhood?
Did I not watch and read pride and prejudice with you on multiple (and, if I may add, capital) occasions? Did I not ply you with chocolate and cashews when you were pregnant with the Little Angela?
You must let go of this anger... the loss to the U.S. is only a small obstacle to help us get stronger... Wait for the germany game. Luongo will be in nets. All will once again be right with the world.

What? You mean U.S.A. didn't already take the gold home? It's not over? The fat lady has not sang her concerto? What's this you say about Germany...??? My God, I have been misled.
My earth is shattered...it's boo hoo for real this time.
Go team ( ) Go!!!!

Hello fellow proud (& not so proud Canadians - you know who you are :(

I just wanted to be the first to say: "Hooray!!!!!!"
We're sitting pretty waiting for the Semis now. & It wasn't because we were explosive or incredibly more talented (pls, with Ovechkin it really doesn't matter who else they have.) No, it was simply bc our coach came up with a brilliant game plan that handicapped all of Russia's best qualities & capitalized on ours. & our troops followed through. That means they have discipline - yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Bc that's something dependable, not that I'm relaxed about the semis, but I'm proud of our guys!
Oh & last thing, to the lady who cheers against the Canadian team but is Canadian - that's just wrong. it doesn't matter how much you hate hockey. This is your country & this is the olympics, you can hate the sport & your cities team & all nhl teams, this is an entirely different beast. Rethink & I think you will agree.
