Why the Economic Downturn is Good for You

Check out this great article at MacLeans about the joys of frugality, and how the recession could actually make you healthier, happier, and more environmentally friendly. Seriously, it's not just a way to make ourselves feel better about the whole thing. They make some very relevant points...

Years ago, amdist an income drop due to embezzlement by an office manager, my ex and I rethought our careers and our goals. We called it semi-voluntary simplicity. It lead to lasting changes in my priorities and lifestyle. I'm thankful it happened.

That's awesome... you seem like someone who would examine your lifestyle and priorities and make changes for the better without being forced to.
Some of the things they mentioned in the article struck me as funny, like the whole "reusing plastic bags".... I'm reading that thinking "I've always done that" and not because of a monetary reason, but because why use a plastic bag one time and then throw it out if it's not dirty. It just struck me as wasteful. My parents placed a huge emphasis on re-use and reduction... there are a lot of those concepts hard wired into my religion, but a lot of people gloss over them, or don't think of them as a really important aspect of Islam, while to me, they're crucial...

I'm quitting my job and go traveling for a few months in Central and South America, does that count? :D

I like teaching, but three years of civil servant students got me. Sorry :P

Heheh.. No offense taken Zhu... As long as you're not MY French teacher (and my French teacher is a 73 year-old Quebecois gentleman named Jean-Lou, who doesn't use a computer, so I don't think you are him), then I can handle it.
Enjoy your trip! Will you be blogging on the go?
