Who Knew?

Yesterday M and I and a few of our friends went for a bike trip around the downtown/lachine canal area of Montreal. It was supposed to take a couple of hours, 3 max. 6 hours later we were heading home with extremely sore legs, sunburns, hunger pangs, and huge smiles. I've biked along the Lachine canal before, but never past St-Pierre (the point where Highway 20 meets highway 138). Yesterday, we continued well past that point, and were rewarded by our discovery of Parc Rene Levesque, an absolutely gorgeous little peninsula off Lasalle, sticking out into the river.
On our way back downtown, we left the canal and rode back along the river path itself, through Lasalle and Verdun.
All I can say is that Montreal has surpassed my expectations for natural beauty and gorgeous, quiet neighbourhoods I didn't know existed. I'm somewhat in love with my adopted city right now. Stunning, and totally bikeable.

P.S. My sisters are back home in Cali and Dubai respectively. I miss them insanely but I'm surprisingly not bawling my eyes out every 5 seconds. I'm shocked at my resilience.

Earlier today, I thought I would get some exercise by getting on my bike and going to the Masjid for Dhuhr. That's about 8km from home, so it would have been a good ride there and back. The forecast called for rain later in the day, but not until after 6pm.

Who knew, indeed?

A few minutes into my ride, it started to get dark, but I figured I would still trust the forecast. 15 minutes in I saw lightning .. then I heard thunder .. and then the downpour started. It took another 15 minutes to get back home, by which point I was soaked (those clothes are still drying). I changed, got into the car, and drove to the Masjid instead.

Not to discourage people from bike rides or anything. I've taken a short route along the Lachine canal with M before, and it's pretty amazing. I do wish I could have been there with you guys. :)

oh my God, K, that's like the bike ride from hell... I can report happily that yesterday's weather was nothing like this: hovering around 22 degrees, sunny with cloudy periods, and a beautiful light breeze. I was never chilly, I was never hot, just sunburnt (but I have no one to blame but myself for that!)
Would've been awesome to have you along. Next time you come, we'll go for another ride and show you this GORGEOUS park (can you bring your bike on the train? Renting a bixi for 5 hours will cost you a fortune, and there are so few stops for them outside downtown that you wouldn't be able to check in and check out...)

It is exciting when you make new discoveries? That's one of the things I love about moving.

I don't think I'd last on such a long ride without a lot of sustenance. And rest, though!

It's awesome VS, it's left me eager to discover more of montreal...
I did take it easier today than yesterday, but I didn't really rest - still had a busy day, but loved it...
The good news: I think I'll sleep like a baby tonight.

Glad you are getting out and enjoying the scenery from the viewpoint of a bike.

saw, me too! we bike A LOT, but it's usually the same stretches. This has motivated me to discover how much more trail montreal has. It's one of the best biking destinations of the world.
