A modest request for the coffee shops

You know I'm a lover of sitting in your wonderful, relaxing atmospheres. You know there is little I enjoy more than kicking back with a latte and a book and just losing myself in the setting.
Of course, I can't drink milk, lactose free or otherwise, because of my allergies. and my solution has always been soy. Well, recently I've read some frightening things about soy (including the fact that 90% of the soy generated for North American consumption is genetically modified - if you haven't yet watched the future of food, you should!). As a result, I've switched to almond milk and stopped buying soy products. Now, this works at home, but in coffee shops, the only non-dairy alternative is soy. Timothy's, Second Cup, Starbucks, anyone who can make you a latte without milk can only make it with soy milk. Now, I'm not drinking these every week or anything, but it would be really really nice if someone started offering almond milk based drinks, or any nut milk for that matter.
So, I'm asking you, please oh coffee shop people, give me something I can drink while I'm reading a book other than herbal tea. Give me a latte without the bad stuff. Please?

I didn't even know there was such a thing as almond milk.

Hear, hear! I completely agree. I became aware of the GMO soy issue and decided to cut it from our diets, but my husband's digestive system beat me to the punch. He really can't tolerate soy protein beyond soy sauce or other mild forms. Top that with thyroid disease (who knew?), and I am wishing those coffee shops would choose a soy-free option too. We are tea drinkers, but I would love to get a chai tea made with almond milk while running about town ...mmm!

I think a petition may be in order :)

saw, there are tons of nut milks. Almond milk is definitely my favourite because it's pretty light and neutral - and since i'm lazy and don't make mine at home except on the very rare occasion, Almond milk also wins because I can easily find a good brand with very few preservatives or other gunk. Try "almond breeze almond milk" sometime the next time you're grocery shopping. It's Delish.
Alisa, a petition sounds like a great idea :)

Next time you're in a coffee shop, leave a comment in the comment's box if they have one; if they don't ask for how you can leave a comment for the manager. If we all do this then within a year or two's time frame, you'll find almond milk/rice milk popping up. It wasn't that long ago when coffee shops didn't offer soy. It's all about what the customers ask for.

very good idea... it's true, it's all about what the consumer wants.
