A Great Cover

This song was first sang by the people of Medina to Prophet Muhammad, Peace be Upon Him, as a welcoming when he migrated from Mecca, fleeing religious persecution. I think it's safe to say that it's the most famous song in Islamic tradition. Countless Muslim artists have "covered" it over the years, and I've known it for as long as I can remember. My favourite version has always been the Yusuf Islam version. Today, my sister sent me the link to the Native Deen version. Also very very beautiful. Enjoy:

Hmmm... I wasn't ready to like it. Very very sentimental attachment to this song and the Yusuf Islam version. Around the time of converting I could have listened to it a thousand times. But I like it. Machallah.

I wasn't planning on liking it either, to be honest, I had a bit of a Native Deen overdose back when I first heard of them, two years ago, and from that point, I kind of got tired of them... This one's really really nice though... less rapper-ish and more "soul-ish"/regga-ish - if you will...
The Yusuf Islam version will probably always reign supreme. Have you heard his "God is the Light" song? Really really beautiful.

Here's my crazy coincidence of the day:

I just walked out into the living room a few minutes after reading your post, and found that my Ipod had been accidentally turned on and was shuffling through songs. When I picked it up, it was playing Tala'al Badru Alayna (the Mesut Kurtis cover).

So then I just had to come back and comment.

Great cover as you say. However, like you and Jen, I prefer the Yusuf Islam version, if only because it better holds to the original tune. And yes, 'God is the Light' is a beautiful song.

That is very nice. I, too, just tried to find the Yusuf Islam version...

Thank you for introducing it to those of us who are unfamiliar with Islamic music.

And, may I say I do love the Arabic script, it looks so poetic.

K, I haven't heard the Mesut Kurtis cover. Any good? Yeah, the Yusuf Islam version is truly fantastic.
COTW, I love peace train too. He has such a soothing voice actually, very steady I find. Too bad you couldn't find his version of Tala'al badru alayna. I'll have to find it somewhere and post it for all of you who haven't heard it.
VioletSky, I love the Arabic calligraphy too. Normal people don't write like that though. It's actually considered an art form. My own handwriting in arabic is truly, truly brutal because I was basically taught at home by my mother on Saturdays and during the summer, and though I can read in Arabic (mostly the Quran), I hardly use the writing...
